Olives

Last October I was invited to Koumaria, a 10 day artist residency near Sparta in Greece operated by the artist collective Medea Electronique.  It was fantastic.

I began shooting a Super 8mm short film with the collaboration of the artists in residence. It has just been completed and is entitled Olive (Super 8mm, 11mins).

Like an Olive Under Pressure Beneath an Icy Moon (Olive) is a short Super 8 film developed with Medea Electronique and the residents at Koumaria 2018. Utilising an improvised mix of documentary and fiction filmmaking techniques the film captures the light and movement of the dedicated dancers, musicians and locals as they work towards their own personal projects and resolutions.

In moving through the work notions of a ritualistic nature emerge and while sometimes absurd and symbolic the direction is unpredictable and spontaneous. People become ghostly figures resembling a phantasmagoria of mystery, places become those of another planet and objects are granted a fetishistic, shadowy half-life.

Capturing the sunlight of the Peloponnese region and photographed on black and white film, handprocessed and projected in situ and occasionally burning and skipping frames, the film takes on a living, breathing form that is very much alive in the presence of it’s the audience.
